Mexican Still life self-portrait 2020

When the lockdown started, I found myself, as many of us did, wondering what was going on. In isolation, I decided to paint a still life, which is a type of art I love to paint but not regularly get to do. My husband and I took a picturesque ride to a nursery in nearby Blanco, Texas-in the heart of the Hill Country-and purchased a whole bucket of beautiful marigolds (cempasuchil). As I set up the still life and began painting, I started to reflect on the props... I thought to myself, "I can almost feel like this doll: here I am in my studio, frozen in time, surrounded by props." I now consider this painting to be an allusive self-portrait of the year 2020.
