I received a commission from the U.S. Army after they saw a painting I did for the U.S. Air Force on their Nightengale, a Medical plane for transporting patience. In order to do this Army commission for the Lewis & Clark Expedition, I traveled to the eastern part of Montana, in order to document the landscape that they would have traveled thru. I also wanted to do the painting of Sacajawea, the Indian woman who actually was a symbol of a "peace party", and not a group to be looked at as a threat to any tribes they might have run into.
And in doing this research, I was blessed with attending the annual gathering of the Crow Nation, and this young woman was a part of that blessing. I went back years later, to try to find her. No one in the tribe knew who she was. I had wanted to give her some limited edition prints of this image, for her to give or sell...my attempt to pay her for my using her spirit, in this painting.
